Important Information for LeadersTypes of Field Trips
The Pilgrimage offers a variety of field trips, which include the following types:
Field Trip Times Leaders have a choice of timeframes:
Choices for field trip and seated program times are as follows Friday 1:00-2:15 pm 2:30-3:45 pm 1:00-3:45 pm - double session 6:00-7:15 pm 9:30 pm Saturday 6:00-7:15 am 7:00-8:15 am 9:00-10:15 am 10:30-11:45 am 9:00-11:45 am - double session 9:00 am - 3:45 pm - all day session 1:00-2:15 pm 2:30-3:45 pm 1:00-3:45 pm - double session 6:00-7:15 pm 9:30 pm Sunday 6:00-7:15 am 7:00-8:15 am 9:00-10:15 am 10:30-11:45 am 9:00-11:45 am - double session Please be as flexible as possible when choosing times to lead your field trips (we use the term field trip for both actual field trips and seated programs.) We strive to build schedules that have a robust selection of field trips at each time period. If you plan to meet at a site outside of Camp Allegany, we strongly suggest choosing the 9:00 am or 1:00 pm start times. Driving times in the park can be up to 30 minutes and the park has a maximum speed limit of 35 mph. Field Trip Content We are looking for unique specialty field trips and seated programs, and a full selection of natural history identification field trips such as trees, wildflowers, insects, butterflies, mammals, grasses, sedges, and rushes, mosses and lichen, fungi, herps and reptiles to name a few. Consider leading multiple sessions of each field trip so that participants have plenty of choices. Often several leaders offer identical or similar field trips that are scheduled at different times. View program descriptions for the field trips offered in 2023 at our Walks & Talks page. Field Trip Locations We encourage leaders to choose locations throughout the park. Use the park visitors map and park program site location numbers and trailhead names to designate your field trip location on the field trip proposal submission form. Click here to view the park program locations map. If you need help determining a location, contact the Field Trip Chair. Leader Expectations & Honorarium Leaders are asked to lead at least two field trips during the weekend. You can offer the same field trip twice or two different trips. For different trips, you must submit separate proposals. We offer the leader an honorarium of $50 for each 1 1/4 hour field trip. We do not pay an honorarium to a co-leader or assistant if you choose to use one. Honorariums are based on the scheduled times and do not include extra money for extra time added to a field trip. Please note that the 6:00 am morning and 6:00 pm evening field trips are usually reserved for bird watching and beaver field trips (evening only). The 9:30 pm slot is for field trips beginning after the conclusion of the evening Big Tent shows. Past examples include night walks, owl prowls, stargazing, and night time insects programs. |
Food & Lodging Options for LeadersThe base camp for the Allegany Nature Pilgrimage is Camp Allegany in the Red House Area of the park. Registration, seated programs, many field trips, the Big Tent Shows, folk concert, hot dog sale and BBQ all happens there.
